Writing plays a major role in my work, which I call textscapes. Though mostly illegible, the words in my pieces provide texture through the mark-making and allude to stories and memories, some of which are my own and real, some that are made up, and others that have been told to me. Through these pieces, I capture small slices of time, like journal entries exposed in a visual format with color and movement.
I work on canvas, acrylic sheets, and Cartiere Magnani's Annigoni cotton-wool blend paper. In addition to the writing, texture for each piece comes from my hands, brushwork, and a subtractive process where layers of poured washes are added to the surface, then partially removed with cloth. Just as the passage of time creates layers of experiencing -- the remembering of an event, the misremembering of it, the distancing, the forgetting -- these coats of color and texture become a lens through which I present my cache of stories and offer viewers ways to reflect upon their own. Influences include Cy Twombly, Nancy Spero, Anselm Kiefer, Wolf Kahn and Chinese calligraphy. |
