Shawn Lindsay, also known as Painta, hails from Forestville, Maryland. An energetic and enigmatic spirit, Shawn had been interested in art and drawing since he was a child, and draws inspiration first from his daily life, cartoons and hip hop culture, as well as painters such as John Singer Sargent, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Alice Neil, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Shawn attended the Visual & Performing Arts program at Suitland High School as a young prospect and went on to study fine arts at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

“While browsing social media I find myself attracted to what I like to think are phenomenons that involve women. With the evolving times of acceptance and equality, you have women finding their own voices. Women are starting to present and express themselves free of outside opinions. Social media platforms have allowed women to be heard and seen. I use my art to document this movement I believe is happening. Most of my references come from social media or friends and acquaintances from social media. I’d either screenshot an image from social media or request self taken or self directed photos, so the piece is viewed how the subject wants to be seen. I never stray too far from the original composition or change features of the figures in the references. I will sometimes replace colors, add textures, or replace the atmosphere. In these days women are tired of being overlooked and I’m here to capture it.”
