ARTIST STATEMENT

Using predominantly water-based media, I create abstract expressionist paintings that reflect my observations of the world around me.  My work is influenced by aspects of the local environment, including geometric landscapes of the water and land, and more amorphous organic shapes of flora and fauna.  On my daily walks, I seek out tricks of light that create unique color and compositional elements in otherwise beautiful but ordinary scenery.   My paintings begin as a direct response to observation, but then become more about my memory and response to the place.  Recently, due to the pandemic, there is more emotional intensity associated with walking through public spaces, even in an otherwise peaceful forest, and my line quality and color choices are reflective of that experience.  Each painting grows naturally through a process of mark making and painting, layering bright swaths of color and gestural drawing, adding and eliminating.

Painting the landscape reinforces my connections to a place.  I see constant and rapid changes happening to familiar scenes, due to the impacts of climate change, and have become increasingly interested in ecology and our need for adaptation.
