Dead birds can symbolize a warning or danger or rebirth or new beginnings. Other meanings could be failed dreams, loss of a loved one or your environment is unsafe, all of which I experienced in 2020. I found myself watching birds from my balcony in locked down Rome, in particular the Monk Parakeets. The birds delighted me with their ambitious, delightful behaviors. Other pandemic pastimes included strolling along the Tiber in the evening to observe the murmurations of the starlings or exploring the Baroque churches with their magnificent frescoed ceilings while the museums and galleries were closed. These lovely visions are evident in these new paintings that include my portrayal of the extinct Carolina Parakeet, the only parrot species native to Northern America and other extinct species including the Akialoa, Vermillion Flycatcher, Mysterious Starling and majestic Spix Macaw.
