For this 3rd Thursday, Studio Gallery is collaborating with GOOD TROUBLE! to bring to you PORTRAITS OF US: B IS FOR BEAUTIFUL, a love letter to our faces, our stories, and the joy we refuse to shrink. This ain’t a quiet paint-and-sip; it’s a high-energy kind of night where oldies, neo-soul, and R&B hold us while we create reflections of ourselves and our people. It is laughter bouncing off gallery walls, brushes moving like memory, and a room full of Black and Brown brilliance choosing softness and celebration. Guided by Emerging DC artist Ivan Puplampu, guests will craft portrait pieces rooted in self-love, legacy, and the beauty that lives in community. With sliding-scale tickets and a mission grounded in reinvestment, this space is built for us and by us.

“Forward Seasons” by Chong Kang & Elizabeth Keithline
Kang and Keithline paint contemporary abstract environments using color and composition to
mirror the joy, energy and movement of contemporary life. From the caves of Lascaux, to the
cathedrals of Rome to the post-war Abstract Expressionist movement, art is often created as a
reaction to the time in which it is made. Contemporary art continues to express current
circumstances—in this case, the noise and chaos of the 21st century.
Kang captures this expression through bright, sometimes neon color and graphic line. Keithline
uses pale colors and softer lines to express a need for serenity as a panacea for modern times.

We invite you to a special talk in our gallery at Washington Studio School Thursday, February 19th, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM with featured artist Anna Gregor and artist-curator Jan Dickey highlighting our current exhibition Why Paint? II. Together, they’ll discuss how each artist approaches paint as material and meaning. Join us to learn more about their practices and the stories behind the works on view.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a small handwoven basket or offering vessel using natural raffia fibers. The baskets will be 3 to 6 inches wide and 2 to 3 inches tall. Through simple, repetitive weaving techniques, participants will explore basketry as both a practical craft and a meditative practice rooted in care, patience, and ancestral knowledge. The workshop centers slowness, touch, and intention, inviting participants to reflect on what they choose to hold, honor, or release. Participants will leave with a completed basket that can be used as an offering vessel, catchall, or personal altar object.
Drop-in to observe or register to participate at: https://posh.vip/e/held-honored-weaving-small-baskets-as-offering-vessels.
Join our currently exhibiting artists for First Friday!
The gallery will remain closed today to ensure the safety of our artists and staff.
Join us for an evening in conversation with the participating artists!
