What could be more mundane and ubiquitous than rocks?

Yet, their varieties, colors, shapes, textures, combinations, and configurations can result in fascinating pileups of sculptural forms.

Think of water rushing through the stone outcroppings of Rio, the statue-like structures along the rivers of Vietnam, the dramatic arches in America’s southwest.

Presented here are my painted takes on real scenes witnessed in Spain, the US West, and China plus even more imaginative leaps involving pebbles, rocks, slopes, and sand.

The goal is not to depict reality so much as to use of my memories of various places as underpinnings for color juxtapositions and whirls of undulating shape.

My work celebrates the connectedness and interdependence of human beings and nature. While acknowledging the real world of tension and conflict that we live in, I turn my attention to harmony, beauty and light that we all crave. We share a bond with people everywhere and a common destiny. My abstract paintings begin as open atmospheric spaces built through color, gesture and layered surfaces.

These spaces are not backgrounds but active fields, places where perception remains unsettled and in motion. Out of the same language, figures begin to appear.

They are not placed in a space but emerge from it, inseparable from the atmosphere around them, sometimes coming into focus and then fading out. The human forms take shape, not as fixed identities, but as presences in transition, bodies caught in mid motion, defined by gesture and contour. They are both grounded and dissolving, echoing the same visual language as the abstractions around them. The figures do not interrupt the abstracts; they arise from them. Each painting holds an instability, where nothing is fixed and the world is always in the process of evolving. In this body of work, abstraction and figuration are not opposites, but partners in a shared inquiry with a continuous visual language.

The drawings in Twilight Gatherings serve as both reflections and interpretations of a convoluted voice in a likewise convoluted world. Using pen and paper, reality and perception are synthesized through the creative process, incorporating imagination, observation, and nostalgia. Each drawing takes place in an otherworldly landscape where animals, forest creatures, spirits, and lost souls gather.  Where a celestial armada of tadpole-like comets fills the skies, tree stumps and woodlands fill the grounds, and waterways envelop the landscape. These are all elements of my earlier drawings that are still evident.

By integrating varied styles and subject matter, I examine concepts of duality, transformation, and the bizarre. Encounters prevail in many forms. Often, they are created by tapping into strange or peculiar thoughts or memories. Eventually, they are transformed and reassembled into entirely new forms and images, and at times, never intended.  Each is a cover of a story without the story, with all occurring at twilight gatherings.

These images are believable until they aren’t. A familiar world becomes ungrounded when we revisit it. This changed world can be beautiful but also frightening. Its beauty calls to us but makes us fearful of what we will find in this new world.
