ARTIST STATEMENT

Malik Greene’s paintings explore the layered terrain of identity, kinship, and emotional resilience within the context of Black life and cultural inheritance. His practice draws from memory, familial archives, and collective experience to construct images that are both intimate and socially resonant. Working primarily in figurative modes, Greene fuses realism with a dreamlike sensibility, developing a visual language that navigates between the material and symbolic.

His work resists reductive narratives by centering the interior lives of Black subjects, portraying not only the weight of generational trauma but also the quiet force of survival, care, and reflection. Each painting becomes a site of inquiry: a space where history, vulnerability, and the right to be fully seen converge.

Greene approaches painting as both expressive and reparative, honoring complexity, cultivating visibility, and engaging viewers in storytelling that is at once personal and universal. His work is an invitation to witness, remember, and reimagine.
