The nationalization of color has been an ongoing theme in US identity, as evidenced in our flag, a deeply revered symbol in our culture. “We pledge allegiance to the flag… and to the Republic for which it stands.” Officially, red stands for valor and bravery, white for purity and innocence, and blue for vigilance, perseverance and justice. The symbolism of the colors was defined when the Great Seal of the US was created in 1782. [USA.gov} These same colors have become polarized as part of a cultural code: red is identified as “right”, blue as “left”, white is assumed to be the preferred culture. Color is weaponized by both sides of the political divide. There is a tradition of artists’ work commenting on social issues. I want to be part of that tradition.
