This exhibition presents the collaborative woodcarvings by Sue Bikoff and Harriet Lesser, merging traditions of printmaking and painting in richly layered reliefs. Imagery develops from photographs and preparatory drawings of tropical vegetation.

The wood, carved by Bikoff, who focuses on fine detail and texture. Lesser continues with layers of acrylic glazes, alcohol inks, and colored pencils. Mixed media photo transfers are frequently integrated into the relief.

Their process is free-associative and improvisational, each stage of carving and painting informing the next. The resulting works blur the boundaries between sculpture and painting, realism and abstraction, handcraft and conceptual art. The artists’ distinct styles—Bikoff’s structural intricacy and Lesser’s painterly depth—intertwine in works that evoke imagined ecologies and tactile atmospheres. Rooted in collaboration, their practice reflects the interdependence found in natural systems, artistic traditions, and human relationships. The journey itself becomes the medium, transforming process into a dynamic visual language.

My work explores the reduction lino printing process as a balance between control , risk and unpredictability. Working from a single block, each layer is planned and carved away, beginning with the lightest colors to darks.  At each stage the lino block is permanently removed, meaning decisions are final.  The limitation of working with one block heightens focus and precision, demanding patience and trust in the process.

These images are believable until they aren’t. A familiar world becomes ungrounded when we revisit it. This changed world can be beautiful but also frightening. Its beauty calls to us but makes us fearful of what we will find in this new world.

In the quiet spaces where light meets shadow, where the self is both the artist and the subject, a unique narrative unfolds. This exhibition is a testament to the myriad ways we perceive and project our own existence. It transcends the superficial boundaries of race, gender, and age, inviting viewers into the private worlds of the artists. These images, captured through the lenses of a diverse group of UDC students, challenge us to look beyond conventional definitions of identity. From stark, unvarnished honesty to ethereal, reimagined realities, the portraits reflect a spectrum of experiences and emotions. This is not about perfect faces or staged lives; it is about the raw, unfiltered essence of being human. It is an exploration of what it means to be seen, to be heard, and to define oneself in a world of predefined labels.
