Gordon Binder

Curated by Mary Higgins

On the Way to Red Hook by Gordon Binder

A longtime resident of Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, Gordon is a big fan of urban life.  He studied architecture and urban planning and devoted his career to conservation and the environment. This urban interest is expressed in his paintings and drawings of skylines, cityscapes, streetscapes, urban landscapes, people out and about in urban settings.  As he considered what to include in the show, he decided to select favorite work from over the years that speak to this urban theme.

Mary Higgins curated the show.

An artist by avocation, Binder studied at the Corcoran with the late DC artist William Christenberry and has been showing art for more than 25 years.  His work is in collections in the Washington area, in New York and San Francisco, Los Angeles, Aspen, Boston, and elsewhere in New England.

Real and Surreal

Coordinated Shows by Judy Bonderman and Jo Levine

Curated by Gaby Mizes

Fractured by Jo Levine

Transitions by Judy Bonderman

Real and Surreal presents photographs by Studio Gallery members Judy Bonderman and Jo Levine that explore the thin line between the factual and the imaginary. While photographing separately, the two artists collaborated on the show’s theme and production.

Judy Bonderman’s show (subtitled Transitions) consists of images of aquatic plants, frogs, water snakes, and goldfish inspired by walks through the Tregaron Conservancy. The underlying theme is a retreat, a quiet reflection, an invitation to “Be Still.” Rather than reproducing what the lens sees, Judy exaggerates and romanticizes in her digital interpretations to convey what, for her, lies between reality and abstract fantasy.

In Jo Levine’s photographs, light fixtures are suspended in the sky, structures float in the air, and lines bend and fracture eerily, creating visual puzzles for the viewer.  Although her pictures look digitally manipulated, they aren’t. Her mysterious photos are all reflections – off water, glass, or other shiny surfaces – that naturally distort the scenes they mirror, making them simultaneously real and surreal.

Essence of Place: Tuscany by Beverly Logan

This is a series of images taken from specific places I have visited. The collages contain pieces of images from the sites put together as one remembers an experience such as through memories or dreams. They are specific  in a way, yet not quite as they actually appeared. The work is informed by Surrealist artists such as Rene Magritte.

Global Empathy by Suliman Abdullah

My work explores the intersection of color theory and emotional perception through photography. I use color as a language—each hue, shade, and saturation chosen to evoke a specific feeling, memory, or atmosphere. This ongoing series captures everyday moments and environments through a lens of intentional color manipulation, asking viewers to feel before they interpret. By merging the technical principles of color theory with the emotive power of visual storytelling, I aim to reveal how color shapes our inner and outer experiences.
